Dear Zoo was created by Rod Campbell in 1982 and is firmly established as a classic children’s picture book. The story of a child who writes to the zoo to send them a pet has been enjoyed by millions of young children who love lifting the flaps to uncover the animals the zoo has sent.
Over 5 million copies have been sold since publication and it is more popular today than it has ever been; it regularly features in Amazon’s top 100 book chart and for the first time, book sales have overtaken The Very Hungry Caterpillar, making Dear Zoo the fifth best-selling picture book title in 2014 – only Julia Donaldson’s work sells more copies!
As well as the board book, the Dear Zoo publishing programme from Macmillan includes pop-up books, colouring books, activity packs, a little library, activity & buggy book versions of this popular story and a charming book & soft toy gift pack.
To further build awareness, Macmillan has created ‘Dear Zoo & Friends’, a brand under which Dear Zoo and Rod Campbell’s other books can be marketed in the longer term. A new website and consumer facing marketing campaign for Dear Zoo is rolling out to accompany this.
To the undoubted delight of children & adults alike, Rod Campbell is bringing Dear Zoo to life, creating a Dear Zoo stage show which is planned to open 2016.
